The Writer’s High
An amazing thing happened this morning. A Facebook memory I posted two years ago popped up, a picture of my first novel titled Six. I had printed out two copies for my closest friends to read. I wanted to know if it was crap or not. They liked it.
I thought the hard part was over and all I had to do now was have an editor tidy it up and have it published.
To make a long story short, she said my book was interesting but had major flaws. As in real major flaws. I was hurt by her recommendations; I was angry and I left Six sitting alone in some dark corner of the computer’s hard drive for more than a year.
Then a friend recommended I attend The Writer’s High Retreat, a seminar for authors. This weekend meeting with experienced writers motivated me enough to fire up that old file and rewrite it.
It was painful deleting characters I liked. Like killing off people I’ve known for years, but they had to go.
Tomorrow I leave for my second Writers High Retreat and Six is still not finished; but it’s close.
Wish me luck.
